At a fantastic awards ceremony in Dublin yesterday, Paul Hession picked up the award for athlete of the year, beating off stiff competition from Rob Heffernan, Eileen O Keefe and Finnoula Britton.
Athenry AC was also nominated from club of the year, but that award went to Donegal's Tir Conaill.
A good crowd attended from Athenry AC, and amoung the guests were Paul's coach Stuart Hogg and his wife, who had flown over from Scotland for the event.

After an anxious wait it's been confirmed today that the Athenry Womens team have won silver medals in the National Senior Women's Marathon Championship of Ireland. This comes only a couple of months after their bronze medals in Waterford at the national Half Marathon. Does anyone else notice a potential sequence here ?

Johnny O'Connor ran another fine marathon yesterday in New York. Reports indicate a very testing second half with a biting cold wind to contend with. Despite these adverse conditions Johnny was only a few minutes outside his personal best which he set in Berlin late last year.

This weekend approximately twenty Athenry runners will make the trip to the capital to take part in the Dublin City Marathon which doubles as the AAI National Marathon Championships. For the last five or six years the club has sent strong contingents to this race and each time it has proven to be one of the most enjoyable running weekends of the year. Many, many training miles have been run over the past few months and this is perhaps the best prepared 'outfit' we've ever sent to the race. Hopefully there’ll be a reward for all the hard work that has been invested.

What a day!
Many, many miles had been run in training. All of the preparation, planning and plotting had been aimed towards this race. The whole weekend is an experience to savour. It builds on the journey eastwards and works its way through the ‘expo’ and the meal the night before, and then builds to its conclusion on Merrion Square around noon on Bank Holiday Monday. The energy and expectation that fills the air on marathon Monday morning lifts the city streets to a steady hum of excitement. You can taste the expectation. You can sense the anticipation.

Did you do the Loughrea 5 Miler this year?
Do you remember that beautiful autumn day bathed in brilliant sunshine when we were hosted by the good members in Loughrea AC? If the memories are starting to fade then you might just be in luck. Former runner turned photographer John O'Connor was on hand that day, as he has been so often before, to record the action and to preserve some of our memories. John is a hugely gifted photographer with an artist's eye for portraiture.

Maire Beatty has been unstoppable this season, cleaning up prizes from race to race with seeming ease. Well this weekend Athenry's answer to Sonia O'Sullivan went international when she took part in the Chicago Marathon. For the second consecutive year the race was run in soaring temperatures. Maire texted from Chicago,
"Am just finished the Chicago Marathon in 3:48. My God it was a hard run. I am wrecked. Very hot day."

The Athenry AC Half-Marathon roadshow moved to Dublin's Phoenix Park this weekend with the running of the Addidas Dublin Half Marathon. The race was held in warm autumnal Dublin sunshine and the atmosphere was great. While Galway City Harrier, Mike O'Connor was storming back to form at the front of the men's race (http://adidasdublinmarathon.ie/news.php?article=191) and Raheny Shamrock's Annette Kealy was winning the women's race a small but determined band of AthenryAC'ites were ploughing their own furrow in the main body of the field.

Paul Hession displayed fantastic late season form to come withing a hair of claiming the last major international 200m title on offer this season. At the IAAF World Athletics Final in Stuttgart yesterday Paul powered off the bend in lane eight and delivered a fantastically strong run down the straight to close down all but the eventual winner Stéphane Buckland of Mauritius. When the photo-finish was examined it was clear that Paul had failed by only .01 of a second to claim the title.

Paul Hession has one or two more tricks up his sleeve before he concludes his track racing schedule for the season. He takes his place in the World Athletics Final 200m race in Stuttgart on Sunday(http://www.iaaf.org/waf08/index.html). Paul has earned his place in this race because of his consistent racing record on the Grand Prix circuit over this summer. We wish Paul the best of Athenry luck and we'll all be rooting for him as he blazes around the bend and powers towards the finish line one more time.
Go for it Paul!
