The 43rd Annual Hollymount International Road Race took place yesterday in cold and breezy conditions on the famous, hilly circuit. The ladies raced 3km and the men 10km.
Athenry AC fielded a ladies team and two men's teams. The organisation was flawless, the atmosphere friendly and the cuppa afterwards was badly needed.
Results attached below. Apologies for the short report.

T'was a cool, crisp last evening out in Dangan for the 5th running of the Athenry AC Handicap 5KM Championships, 14 October 2008.
The weather stayed dry though the track was still wet. (I was in a quandry whether to run in spikes or runners but that decision was soon made for me as I forgot to pack the former yesterday morning!)
Thirty four eager(!) athletes(?) lined up at the start and after minimal ado from starter, Alan Burke, we were off.
The field quickly spread out into their own little groups.

Results from last Sunday's action......
This weekend saw another chapter added to the illustrious history of road racing in Loughrea. Loughrea AC hosted one of the best road races seen anywhere in the country this year and they were blessed with warm late summer sunshine for their efforts. There was a festival atmosphere around the newly built Lough Rea Hotel and Spa on the outskirts of town as over 350 runners and walkers prepared to run the traditional Loughrea distance of five miles. There was quality in depth in the men's race and Pauline Curley was a strong pre-race favourite on the women's side.

The Ballina 10k, which took place on Sunday, was the sixth race in the 2008 Mayo AC C&C Cellular Road Race League. Conditions were very wet on the day but did not dampen the enthusiasm of participants. This popular course starts and finishes beside the Moy and is a nice combination of town and the sylvan surroundings of Beleek.

Words and Photo's From Tom Hunt Mayo AC
There was a good field of over 100 for the Ballyhaunis 8k, the 5th Race in 2008 Mayo AC Open Road Race League. Weather conditions were pleasant for once on Saturday evening for this race, excellently organised once again by the local team led Jimmy Donnelly and Martin Fitzmaurice on new one lap course.
As the leaders turned off the Claremorris road after 3k, John Byrne (Mayo AC) had already established a 100 metres lead over clubmate Timmie Glavey, who was just ahead of David Carrie (Dunleer AC).

A record attendance of over 200 lined up. Just think of the crowd there would have been except for the utterly deplorable weather that afternoon, and more importantly, during the race itself.
A goodly number of PBs were recorded nonetheless.
Many thanks to the organising committee in Clare River Harriers for the race and the many refreshments......

The Annaghdown Summer Solstice 10K took place on Saturday June 21st. The day started off wet, and then got wetter! Despite this, over 150 brave souls from all over the country, and some as far afield as Scotland and Sydney made it to the starting line. The race only had to be delayed by a mere 5 minutes and once the worse of the rain stopped, they were off. The weather actually cooperated and it was dry for the duration of the run and at the finish. In fact it was so nice it convinced some folks to take a dip in the lake to cool off.

Report by Tom Hunt of Mayo AC
The second race in Mayo AC's 2008 Road Race League, sponsored by C & C Cellular, took place in fine but breezy conditions at Claremorris on Saturday evening. The DeCare International sponsored road race and walk, now in it's seventh year, started and finished in the Main street. There was an excellent turn-out of 200 participants: club runners from all the major Connacht clubs, walkers, fund raisers in aid of Mayo Cancer Support Association.
