On the 17th of August at 3pm we all gathered at The Centre for Astronomy at N.U.I.G. It was an event in our “Space Hop” Summer Reading Programme and Dr.Andy Shearer had invited us to visit the 3D visualisation suite to see the stars. We trod softly through the bowels of the Physics Department, and all of the Space Hoppers had smiles of anticipation as we started our space adventure. We were ushered through a science laboratory where students with furrowed brows peered through spectrometers and we could only imagine the stellar scenes or mind boggling aliens they encountered. We were issued with sunglasses as we entered the 3D visualization suite and took our seats with the other space travelers. We traveled through our universe, stars of all shapes and sizes whizzing past. John, our...

The decision of the recent meeting of the Environment SPC of Galway City Council to recommend the introduction of a pay-back scheme for drink cans is warmly welcomed. As spokesperson for the Galway Friends of the Forests, the local community and environmental group, I applaud the foresight of the Environment SPC on this initiative that was proposed by Councillor Catherine Connolly supported by city officials. This facility will probably be initially based at the Liosbaun recycling centre. The motion will now go forward for ratification to a full meeting of the City Council. The ‘Galway Friends of the Forests’ has been lobbying since 2007 on the need to re-introduce a nationwide payback scheme for take-away beverage bottles as well as cans in order to clean up our parks,...
So sad to hear of the death of Mick Lally, one of Ireland's most beloved actors. A student of my son Shane's school (St. Mary's) and graduate of our university of NUI Galway, he was a founding member of Druid Theatre which has done so much to transform Galway into a major cultural centre. He was too a great supporter of the Irish language and left-wing causes. But my abiding memory of Mick will be his voice, so distinct, so earthy, so colloquial, so West of Ireland.Of course for most Irish people, it will be his role as the likable farmer Miley Byrne in the television soap opera Glenroe that will stand out.Hence the comment today by one contributor to a radio show who said that when Mick reaches the pearly gates of heaven, he will look up at the impressive celestial structure in front...

One of the things I miss about working in Galway is the lunch and tea rituals. Lunch tends to be rushed or desk affairs in the US, and while the Irish abroad normally make time to go to the canteen here, I miss the long (and often frankly ridiculous) conversations over cornflakes. One long discussed issue with my colleague Declan over cups of stewed tea in Galway is my reluctance to sign up for any sponsored fundraising events which are less than something I’d roll out of bed for, say, for entertainment on a random Saturday (rules out climbing Croke Patrick, anything which involves ‘walking’ anywhere in Galway, any run under twenty miles, etc.) Declan was mystified by this. In...

Athenry runners met with considerable success over the weekend at the Claregalway 10km, which doubles as the Galway 10km Championships over that distance. In the individual competitions both male and female Athenry AC runners made the frame. A back to form Brian O'Connor came home strongly in third place in the men's race (34:51), just eleven seconds ahead of club captain Brian Bruton(35:02) in 5th. Brian O'Connor's individual bronze is a fine reward for a period of dilligent training recently.

Galway City Library featured a world of literary and arts celebration on Culture Night last. It was headlined by a very special event. Reflecting on the exemplary life of poet and doctor William Carlos Williams, " A River of Words" was an entertainment for all ages contemplated through the words and images of a great writer and a great man. Popular Galway wordsmith, Susan Millar Du Mars, narrated the...

News has reached Athenry AC HQ that one of our newer fit4life members has pulled on the green and white singlet of Ireland and represented his country in some style. Eoin Madden was in action at the weekend in the European Transplant and Dialysis games held in Dublin. Eoin is the recepient of a kidney transplant and he powered through the 5000m in a new PB of 26.44.
